DANNY'S 9 COMMANDMENTS

FOR FREE-LANCE MUSICIANS

1.  YOU ARE CLOUD 9

Whatever group, orchestra, or band you are playing with, represent the group as if you own it. Be intentional in representing the group with positive language.

2.  Greet the other musicians BEFORE you get in front of the crowd

A client refused to pay us once because two musicians introduced themselves to each other in front of the client. The client assumed that this group had never played together before and was furious. Even though both players were top professionals, they sounded great. It cost me $900

3.  GET THERE EARLY and stay late

It won’t kill you. Let the contractor know that you appreciate the opportunity. Make sure you develop a reputation as someone who can be trusted. The contractor is already suffering from high blood pressure and doesn’t need any more stress. Be a stress reliever!

4.   Be a FIRST RESPONDER

Please respond to any gig offer within 2 hours. Don’t make the contractor wait on you. That is rude and unprofessional. I drop people off my contact list if they care so little about getting ahead in life. Act like you want the gig, not like you are doing the contractor a favor (especially when you are doing them a favor).  Anything more than two days, and you should re-evaluate your career choices.

5.  COMPLIMENT the other players

Just do it. AND don’t put them down behind their back later on. Just stop it. Every musician in the world has a degree of insecurity. Be kind!

6.   BE FLEXIBLE

When? You might ask.  All the time. When things get chaotic, simply sit back, relax, and let the show unfold.  Know that nothing ever goes just the way you need it to all the time.

7.   DRESS WELL

not so fancy that you are obviously insecure and need to draw attention to yourself. The only attention you should be grabbing should come from your excellent playing, not your special fedora.

8.   BE PREPARED

Get warmed up at home. Ensure all your gear, instruments, tablet, glasses, and other essentials function properly. Get your clothes looking great. Shine your shoes, comb your hair, and take inventory of everything you need. Take your time. Don’t watch the Denver Nuggets so much that you rush off to the gig without something you need. (done that). Make sure you bring what you need for the next gig if you have a double or triple that day.

9.  SMILE

You are getting paid to play a musical instrument. Smile with your eyes, mouth, and your thoughts. You are blessed.
